NPR-Station Compact Negotiations Ongoing

This is the Manager’s Minute.

For many months, NPR member stations have been involved in discussions with NPR over programming fees and how we plan to work together to provide local and national services during the next few years.

Last week, I was in Washington, D.C. to participate in a major meeting about the proposed new NPR-Station Compact.

This is a critical time for all of us, as NPR and member stations across the nation develop the principles and strategy to guide our operations and relationship.

Those of us in medium-sized markets that serve urban and rural audiences over large geographic areas are making the case for a plan that helps keep our programming costs as reasonable as possible.

We are also discussing ways to fundraise more effectively so that NPR and member stations, including KGOU, can continue to provide the essential services our listeners expect.

A vote on the final agreement may come as early as November.

Until next time, with the Manager’s Minute, I’m Dick Pryor.

Dick Pryor has more than 30 years of experience in public service media, having previously served as deputy director, managing editor, news manager, news anchor and host for OETA, Oklahoma’s statewide public TV network. He was named general manager of KGOU Radio in November 2016.
