Memorial Institute For The Prevention Of Terrorism To Close

MIPT.org

A counterterrorism institute in Oklahoma is shutting its doors after failing to find funding to continue operations.

The Oklahoman reports the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism has provided training to tens of thousands of police officers from around the country.

Director David Cid said Rose State College, where the institute relocated late last year, went to extraordinary lengths to accommodate it. But he says the institute just couldn't overcome the loss of federal funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in September.

The institute had been located in the same building as the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.

Cid says most police departments don't have money for the training the institute provided to recognize possible threats and effectively gather information. Asking them to pay was not an option.
