Thanks to the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), Edmond Parks and Recreation is hosting a virtual BioBlitz this September in support of the Parks for Pollinators campaign.
The Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz is an event in which community members work with parks and rec staff to create a snapshot of the variety of wildlife that can be found in Mitch Park in September. We use a no-cost platform/app called iNaturalist to take pictures of plants, insects and animals to see what wildlife is present in the park during this month and provide us with more information about pollinators, which are essential to our ecosystem.
If you'd like to watch a tutorial on using iNaturalist, you can find that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xENz1xRu0wI
This information will help us understand how we can better protect pollinators and other important wildlife in our community.
Join us the second Saturday of the month from 10:00 am -4:00 pm for Curiousidays! Enjoy activities, crafts, museum specimens, collection chats, and more! All activities are free with museum admission.
Join us as we delve into the fascinating world of migration! From the breathtaking journeys of monarch butterflies to the incredible navigation skills of birds and the seasonal shifts of marine life, migration is a remarkable phenomenon that highlights the interconnectedness of ecosystems.
See the largest pumpkins in the state at the annual Oklahoma Giant Pumpkin Growers Weighoff. Taking place on September 13, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City, the event features the official weigh-in and showcase of the largest pumpkins grown in Oklahoma.
Join this free, interactive program as guest instructors Zach, Leah, and Rick share their specialized light panels to attract an array of nocturnal insects for us to observe. We will be learning some basic information about iNaturalist, and our discoveries from this program will be added to the Parks for Pollinators 2025: Mitch Park BioBlitz project on iNaturalist. We're excited to share this unique opportunity to explore the natural world after dark! Here are a few helpful tips for this program:
Please register each person planning to attend. This program will be held at the Mitch Park Amphitheater, on the west side of The MAC (Multi-Activity Center).
Please bring folding chairs / picnic blankets for you and your group to have a guaranteed place to sit.Bring a headlamp or flashlight for each person in your group - it helps if you have a red light option to reduce the odds of attracting bugs to you instead of the light panels. Please apply insect repellant in the parking lot. We will be attracting and interacting with bugs in their natural habitat and do not want to harm them, so be sure you are not applying insect repellants in the program space. Be sure to dress weather appropriate. We recommend wearing closed toe, comfortable walking shoes.Remember to bring drinking water and snacks.
